THE WISDOM of KING CANUTE
There’s a new global religion that is spreading even faster than Covid. Its followers are all convinced that apart from their radical agenda, the world as we know it, is doomed to end within the next decade. These ‘believers’ have bought into the lie that they have the power and means to save the planet. Perhaps the greatest tragedy in all of this is that among these zealots there are genuine born-again believers who have a greater burden for saving the planet than for saving souls.
Now I’m not opposed to cleaning up our rivers, lakes and oceans from the millions of tons of waste that are carelessly tossed into them each and every day. Nor am I opposed to certain legislation that will help improve our air quality etc. In fact, if you have a spare Tesla sitting idle, I’ll happily take it off your hands.
The real issue in all of this ‘green talk’ is that we never hear a single word about God’s role in global matters. After all, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof: the world, and all they that dwell therein.” Psalm 24:1. That being true, then God is the final authority when it comes global matters. He alone is the Alpha and Omega.
Following the flood, God spoke to Noah reminding him, “I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.” He then added, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Gen. 8:21,22. These verses alone tell us that God is the one in control of the weather and its seasons.
Even a cursory reading of the scriptures reveal that God has an awesome armory at His disposal. The snow, ice, sleet, rain, frost, wind, storms, hailstones, lightning, fire, earthquakes, including the heat of the sun, can all be triggered to accomplish His purposes. Take for example famine. Famine, we are told, is one of God’s judgments as well as a sign of His return. The Book of Revelation tells of a coming event where God will rain down hailstones weighing well over a hundred pounds. (That will cool things down for a while as well as leaving a lasting impression!)
I was never much of a student. I especially loathed history, English history in particular. English history takes you back to virtually creation itself. You have to memorize a thousand battles and an equal number of Kings and Queens etc. One king, however, did manage to capture my attention. His name was King Canute, an Anglo-Saxon king who reigned around 1016. He was also the King of Denmark as well as Norway. History records that in order to show those around him that the King was not divine, he brought his throne to the edge of the sea. Then, he said to the rising tide, “You are subject to me, as the land on which I am sitting is mine, and no one has resisted my overlordship with impunity. I command you, therefore, not to rise on to my land, nor to presume to wet the clothing or limbs of your master.” But the sea came up as usual, and disrespectfully drenched the king’s feet and shins. Jumping back, the king cried, “Let all the world know that the power of kings is empty and worthless, and there is no king worthy of the name save HIM by whose will heaven, earth and the sea obey eternal laws.” Then according to tradition, King Canute removed his crown, hung it from a crucifix and never wore it again in honor of Almighty God.
King Canute, unlike our President and member of Congress, understood that God alone has the power over His own creation. Will the world end in the next decade or two if we fail to confront global warming? No! God declares that, “the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment…but the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness looking for and hastening the coming day of God…” 2 Peter 3:10-13
Perhaps it’s time to forget about ‘Global warming’ and take seriously God’s global WARNING.
“For this reason, you be ready too; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.” Matt. 24:44
